This piece specifically works with the idea of our physical relationships with our own bodies and how we occupy space. Ana Mendieta's artwork is dear to me as her sense of physical displacement relates to feelings of dysphoria I feel as a queer woman. The work is particularly poignant as Mendieta died as a result of intimate partner violence and I want to celebrate and share the work of an artist I admire so much, and her experience, which is unfortunately common.
The work is a dialogue between sound and visual imagery exploring physical relationships with the body and its surrounding environments. The soundscapes created by the live performers are interpretative responses to the projected visuals. The video art of Ana Mendieta explores her relationship with her body as a Cuban woman during the 1980s and her feeling of cultural and physical displacement as well as the violence inflicted by society upon women's bodies. The sound and visuals overlay, creating a palimpsest of imagery that disembodies the performer from the sound being generated, depicting the dehumanising nature of social displacement.
